A Hidden LA Gem

May 1st, 2010 — 7:40pm

After a nice lunch outside in Griffith Park, we went driving around nearby neighborhoods to see some fun amazing beautiful houses.

We kept driving and turning through the hills, and we come across THIS:

ennishouse

From the other side of this, it looked like some sorta Mayan/Incan temple! I tried piecing together these photos from my iPhone to show how large this was (pretty large for a residential neighborhood!).

Photo from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ennis_House

Turns out, we stumbled upon Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House. This “house” was built in 1924 for Charles and Mabel Ennis and has now become a historic landmark. You may recognize the place from movies like, “Blade Runner” and “House on Haunted Hill”. I was kinda waiting around to see if Indiana Jones would pop out somewhere.

Unfortunately, they no longer do guided tours, so no inside escapades for me. Learn more about the history and current renovations about the Ennis House at the website: http://www.ennishouse.org/.

Heatswell Coffee Cups

March 29th, 2010 — 2:22pm

Amron Experimental shares a new conceptual coffee cup sleeve that transforms as you pour hot liquid into the cup. So fascinating to watch!

“Pour a hot beverage like coffee, tea, hot chocolate or soup into this thin stackable coffee cup and watch its midsection swell to form a cool insulating collar – a 100% genuine endothermic reaction.”

I wonder where this could go…. Restaurants and cafes can add a whole new interactive experience by using this material with their drinks, and maybe soups?

Check out more at their website, http://www.amronexperimental.com/Heatswell.html. Hope I get my free sample!

It’s Coming…

March 4th, 2010 — 12:21pm
It’s Coming…
…Right to your home! Panasonic will be putting their 3D products in the market later this fall.
The AG3DA1 is their full HD 3D camcorder selling for $21,000. You can place a $1,000 deposit to reserve your place to buy later this fall. As far as I know, it’s the first prosumer HD 3D camera announced to sell this year. I like that it still has the familiarity of the HVX200, except this can shoot 1080p.
Click here to learn more about the AG3DA1!

What adds an extra touch of Panasonic coolness is that they are also releasing a 3D production monitor for field use, the BT-3DL2550. Yes, this means you can be shooting AND watching your camera in action in 3D! It will be coming this September at a price around $9,900.
3D, you better not fail us this year. Don’t forget, the world cup will also be broadcasted in 3D!

Chicken Point Cabin

February 2nd, 2010 — 2:59am

I stole another thing from NOTCOT.

This pic is of Chicken Point Cabin. Besides the fact that they kept an industrial look with “low maintenance” materials and that they have a moving wall, I love this amazing bedroom scenery!

See more photos and a video of the moving 20×30 ft. wall and the rest of the lakeside woods shelter built by Olson Kundig Architects here.

Yulia Brodskaya

January 17th, 2010 — 10:21pm

Okay, one more blog for the weekend!

Yulia Brodskaya, a designer and amazing typographic artist! I love her portfolio site. If you’re into any kind of design, check out her work. The ones seen above are made from paper!

I think this is one of the paths that typography and graphic design will be going toward this year, with these kinds of details, colors, and illustrations you’ll see on her site.

Affordable Home Design: Simplicity in Colors

January 17th, 2010 — 10:11pm

I found this pretty interesting. I was randomly searching for random photos of affordable home design and came across two that caught my eye. The above photo caught my eye because of the tunnel-like open air layout and its sustainability. But then I saw the one below:

What these two have in common is the unfinished-wood style. But after seeing the second photo, the first one looks a bit too unfinished. All the sections blend into each other. With the second photo, it is still simple and modern, but just seems more appealing with the white walls, blue countertop, even that orange-red bowl.

If you click on the second photo, you’ll see more photos where they continue the wood/orange/white/blue palette theme. With the first, the only contrast is with the mossy green, but it doesn’t seem contrasty enough with the wood.

Just found that interesting, that focusing on a complex layout can compromise the right color scheme.

Conceptual Fashion

Matthew Ames is a conceptual designer who designed the following in these pics. All I “knows” is that I love the black-and-white color contrast.

Whaaat The…….

January 11th, 2010 — 9:11pm

Ok, enough negative updates on Facebook. Why didn’t I know about this sooner?! The next World Cup (South Africa!) will be recorded on 3D cameras! So I’m a little behind on the news, but this is fascinating. Is 3D finally catching on? Okay, dumb statement after hearing about Avatar every day.

Anyways, I have got to find a way to check out the next World Cup in 3D. Supposedly coming this year, networks like DirecTV will be installing 3D outlets that will correlate with new 3D TV’s (that way people will have something to watch on their 3D TV’s). All I ask for is that this better not make me dizzy and jarring. They should  make 3D disposable glasses that can fit around regular glasses….
