Still in LA, still counting down the days until EUROPE!
Check out these beautiful photographs by Nan Lawson for sale on her Etsy shop:

I love the bleached, muted color palette that came out with the film. I even like the washed-out pastel colors in the La Tour Eiffel photo. This gives me some ideas for what kind of art I want to do abroad.

With all the traveling I’m doing right now, I should be blogging. But sadly, don’t have much from Indianapolis. On the way back, however, I got a photo of the Grand Canyon from the airplane ride back to LA!

I had no idea that down Santa Monica Blvd., walking distance from me, is a Lomography Gallery store! There are only two in the US: one in New York and apparently one right here in LA. They not only sell cameras and film, but develop as well! It’s not easy trying to find a place that develops film. Now I gotta find those rolls of film I shot a year ago….

They have this new camera called the Spinner 360. You pull this ring and it makes the camera spin in full circle as it takes a picture.

And this is what you come up with!

We walked into the store just after they had done a free workshop where people took loaner cameras of different kinds from Lomography and walked about Santa Monica Blvd. to take pictures of the LA Gay Pride Parade. Fun! They have many free and cheap workshops coming up, including a ride to Venice Beach!

So if you’re in the area, drop by the Lomography Gallery Store of LA! They have a very friendly and knowledgeable staff that encourages you to play with the cameras and check out the different cool stuff and workshops they have. There’s also an upstairs lounge area, where I guess is good for workshop meetups or just lounging about and showing off your photos.

After all that blogging about Facebook and charging for water, I need to recurse back to my happy place of photo/food/video blogging.
A couple weeks ago, Radiolab broadcasted live the first event of the AWE-MAGEDDON series. And the most shocking thing in watching the first video? Jad and Rob have faces!

Okay, so once you get over that shocking revelation, tune in to the rest of the video excerpt of Iain Couzin, assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University, discussing the study of collective behaviors in animal groups (such as in the photos below). Enjoy!

What is MANGO doing on my coffee cup? Seriously? I don’t know, but I definitely approve.

Stopped by the NY Bagel & Deli place on Wilshire in Santa Monica in hopes to find a jalapeño cheese bagel. Even better, they gave me a jalapeño cheese mini bread loaf, stuffed it with cream cheese, and handed me a small cup of joe. The cup was also a promo advert for MANGO, the Barcelona clothing company, which I am a big fan of.
I have never seen this before, but I like it (also liked the jalapeño cheese bread loaf). Lo quiero mucho. Yummy morning snack. And yes, I will definitely be checking out this promo on MNG’s site tonight!

And the beautiful presentations and photography do not help.

Fisher and Paykel catered for a MasterChef premiere in New Zealand. Funny, we have a show called Master Chef coming up on Fox here in the US. I’m interested in making those muffin puffs in the photo on the left. It was their first Our Kitchen catering gig ever
. Click here to check out the Our Kitchen blog by Fisher and Paykel.

I found this pretty interesting. I was randomly searching for random photos of affordable home design and came across two that caught my eye. The above photo caught my eye because of the tunnel-like open air layout and its sustainability. But then I saw the one below:

What these two have in common is the unfinished-wood style. But after seeing the second photo, the first one looks a bit too unfinished. All the sections blend into each other. With the second photo, it is still simple and modern, but just seems more appealing with the white walls, blue countertop, even that orange-red bowl.
If you click on the second photo, you’ll see more photos where they continue the wood/orange/white/blue palette theme. With the first, the only contrast is with the mossy green, but it doesn’t seem contrasty enough with the wood.
Just found that interesting, that focusing on a complex layout can compromise the right color scheme.

Matthew Ames is a conceptual designer who designed the following in these pics. All I “knows” is that I love the black-and-white color contrast.

Word went around about Jay Leno wanting to take over the Tonight Show again, how the talk show and news lineup wasn’t working for NBC, and now Conan has the option to be pushed back for Late Night or opt out of his contract.
Yeah, I don’t understand it either. An unhappy talk show viewer finally did something about it. Today, the Jay Leno studio on the NBC Studios lot in Burbank was egged.
